China on Thursday urged the U.S. side not to set obstacles for Chinese diplomats in the United States to do their normal jobs.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks in response to reports that the United States ordered Chinese diplomats to notify the State Department before meeting with local officials, claiming this is a reciprocal measure against China's practices.

"The U.S. Department of State has made additional demands on and deliberately set obstacles for Chinese diplomats in the U.S. to carry out normal official activities in the country. China opposes this move and has made stern representations to the U.S. side," Geng told a press briefing.

Noting that China has consistently supported and provided necessary convenience for the normal work-related activities of the U.S. diplomats in China, Geng said the United States' claim of restrictions on the U.S. diplomats' activities in China was simply not true.

"We urge the U.S. side to correct its mistake, withdraw the decision, and provide support and convenience for Chinese diplomats in the United States to carry out activities, instead of setting up barriers," Geng said.
