Hong Kong LegCo to resume meeting on Oct. 16

Hong Kong's Legislative Council (LegCo) will start its 2019-2020 ordinary session on Oct. 16, said the gazette issued by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government.

Matthew Cheung, chief secretary for administration of the HKSAR government, said in a letter to LegCo President Andrew Leung that Carrie Lam, HKSAR chief executive, will deliver her policy address at the meeting.

It will be followed by the announcement of the withdrawal of the proposed ordinance amendments concerning fugitive offenders transfers.

In September, Lam announced four actions to find a way out of the impasse for Hong Kong, including moving a motion to withdraw the proposed amendments to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance when the Legislative Council resumes.

The actions also include fully supporting the work of the Independent Police Complaints Council (IPCC), reaching out to the community to start a direct dialogue, and inviting community leaders, professionals and academics to independently examine the society's deep-seated problems and to advise the government on finding solutions.
